How To Figure Out GPA:
In order to calculate GPA, this is done by simply dividing the total amount of grade points earned during a term by the total amount of credit hours attempted during a term.

Now that you have learned how to figure out GPA, are you ready to apply for the university of your choice? You may be wondering, “But what if I have a low GPA”? Well, it’s not the end of the world. In fact, there are things you can do to raise your GPA on the college GPA scale.
Actually, GPA is a pretty important factor when it comes to getting accepted by colleges, pursuing grants or scholarships, and ultimately landing a nice high-paying job. In case you did not download the GPA calculator we created for you in excel, we have conveniently provided a GPA calculator at the bottom of this page so you can easily calculate college GPA to know where you stand.
However, it is also important to actually know how to calculate GPA by hand so you will know what the numbers mean when you are entering them in our GPA calculator. Let’s first start with defining some key terms.
Grade Point Average (GPA) – This is the average of grades earned in all of your courses taken during a term divided by the number of credits you take.
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) – This is the average of all the student’s grades achieved while in attendance at a high school or college which includes dividing the number of points earned in all courses attempted by the total credit hours taken in which a grade of A, B, C, D, F/WF. Please bear in mind that some high schools consider honors courses to carry more weight.
How To Calculate Overall GPA
Your grade point average is basically a representation of how well you performed in class. You can also refer to your GPA as quality points as it will be one of the major factors that will determine your acceptance into college.
Each letter grade has a numerical value: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
However, if you are taking either honors courses or collegiate courses (AP), the point values are usually weighted. For instance, the numerical value will for each letter grade will have an extra half or grade point added.
An “A” in Honors = 4.5
An “A” in Collegiate Courses = 5
How To Calculate GPA From Percentage:
Unfortunately, some schools do not assign a numerical value to grades so you will need to convert the score as a percentage to a numerical grade. Here is a typical percentage scale used by most institutions:
90 – 100% = A
80 – 89% = B
70 – 79% = C
60 – 69% = D
<59% = F
GPA Scales:
How To Calculate GPA On A 4.0 GPA Scale
A = 4 points | B = 3 points | C = 2 points | D = 1 point | WF/F = 0 points. P/NP are not included in a student’s GPA.
I(Incomplete) and W(Withdrawals) do not have an impact on GPA.
How To Calculate GPA On A 5.0 GPA Scale
A = 5 points | B = 4 points | C = 3 points | D = 2 point | F = 1 points. P/NP are not included in a student’s GPA.
I(Incomplete) and W(Withdrawals) do not have an impact on GPA.
If you need to determine how to calculate high school GPA; how to calculate college GPA, or how to calculate weighted GPA, you can download the GPA calculator in excel to calculate your GPA quickly.
FYI: The GPA calculator multiplies each course grade by the number of credit hours to get a sum. It then divides this sum by the sum of the credit hours.
My son’s GPA doesn’t match what the school transcript is showing. I have put the numbers in repeatedly and get the same numbers every time. What is the problem? Have you seen this before?
Hi Elaine,
I have not come across that situation, but I would be more than glad to help.
Hi there,
I had the same problem. All you have to do is go to the right of the excel where it shows the grade and number. Just delete the A+ and its number to the right, A- and its number to the right, and so on for B+, B-, C+, C-, etc. Just keep the A, B, C, D and F. This will make the excel program match your son’s transcript.
Good luck!
